Tumescent Liposuction
Tumescent awake liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits from beneath the skin. This technique is among the most common and widely performed variants of liposuction. The term “tumescent” specifically refers to the use of local anesthesia for numbing the targeted areas, as opposed to employing general anesthesia. Conducted on an outpatient basis at Avant Dermatology & Aesthetics, tumescent liposuction is widely recognized as being safer than traditional liposuction methods.
What are the benefits of tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction offers several advantages, including:
- Fat Removal Precision: This technique allows the surgeon to remove fat more evenly and with greater precision.
- Local Anesthesia: The use of lidocaine in the tumescent solution provides local anesthesia, avoiding the need for general anesthesia and reducing potential complications associated with general anesthesia.
- Minimized Discomfort: The use of local anesthesia helps to manage pain during and after the procedure, reducing the need for strong pain medications.
- Quicker Recovery: Because of the reduced trauma to the tissues and the use of local anesthesia, patients often experience a quicker recovery and shorter downtime compared to traditional liposuction methods.
What does the tumescent liposuction procedure entail?
Dr. Sheila Farhang will identify and mark the areas designated for treatment, subsequently administering local anesthesia to numb the region from which fat will be extracted.
Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Farhang will proceed to remove the excess fat using a cannula. Tumescent liposuction affords Dr. Farhang the capability to sculpt and contour the treated region with precision, aiming for the desired aesthetic results. Following the fat removal, compression garments will be applied to the treated area to aid in minimizing swelling.
What does recovery entail?
Recovery time for tumescent liposuction varies depending on both the extent of the procedure and the individual’s unique healing process. It is common for patients to experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort during the initial days following the surgery. To facilitate healing, patients are often advised to wear compression garments, refrain from engaging in strenuous activities, and adhere to post-operative care guidelines.
Tumescent liposuction is considered safe for body contouring and fat reduction, targeting areas such as the abdomen, double chin/neck, arms, flanks/back, hips, and thighs. However, like all surgical procedures, tumescent liposuction carries certain risks and potential side effects, including but not limited to infection, bruising, swelling, and contour irregularities.
