What Is Hylenex?
Hylenex (hyaluronidase) is a powerful FDA-approved enzyme used to dissolve hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, but when used in dermal fillers, it can sometimes lead to unwanted results, such as overcorrection, asymmetry, or migration. Hylenex breaks down the filler material, allowing your body to safely absorb it and restore your skin to its natural state.
Hylenex is specifically formulated to target fillers composed of hyaluronic acid. It does not dissolve fillers made from other materials, such as Radiesse or Sculptra. During your consultation, Dr. Farhang will evaluate your treatment history and goals to determine if Hylenex is right for you.
Why Consider Dissolving Dermal Fillers?
While dermal fillers are designed to enhance and rejuvenate your appearance, there are situations where dissolving them becomes necessary or desirable. Common reasons include:
- Overfilled Appearance: Excessive filler can create an unnatural look, such as an overly plump appearance or distortion of facial features.
- Asymmetry: Uneven placement or differences in filler distribution can disrupt facial harmony.
- Migration of Filler: In some cases, filler may move from its intended area, resulting in lumps, puffiness, or undesirable changes to the surrounding tissues.
- Preference for a Natural Look: If you decide you prefer a more natural appearance or wish to explore alternative treatments.
- Complications: Though rare, allergic reactions or delayed inflammatory responses to filler may necessitate dissolving the product.
- Preparing for Re-treatment: Dissolving old or uneven filler ensures a clean slate for achieving optimal results with a fresh filler treatment.
